Why the action was brought

A coalition of 50 attorneys general settled with Equifax over the 2017 data breach affecting more than 147 million Americans. Breached information included Social Security numbers, names, dates of birth, addresses, credit card numbers and some driver's license numbers. The states alleged the breach occurred because Equifax failed to implement an adequate security program.

Why the action was brought

Uber learned in November 2016 that hackers accessed personal information about drivers, including driver's license information for roughly 600,000 drivers nationwide and a small number in Wyoming. Although driver's license numbers triggered Wyoming's notification duty, Uber delayed reporting the breach until November 2017, and must now strengthen data security and governance.
